On February 20, the Polotsk Art Gallery celebrates its 40th anniversary
Tourists will not get bored in ancient Polotsk. And the locals are inspired not only by "legends of ancient times". Forty years ago, on February 20, 1981, the Art Gallery opened its doors in the city, showcasing art from different eras.
For ten years, the gallery was housed in the building of the Epiphany Cathedral. In 1992, it moved to the Museum of Belarusian Book Printing, and since 2002, it has been located in the building of the former Jesuit collegium.
"The gallery hosts over 20 exhibitions a year. The expositions are very diverse. We try to showcase paintings, graphics, and sculptures from different time periods. We actively cooperate with Belarusian and foreign museums in the format of exchange exhibitions," says Larisa Lysenko, head of the Art Gallery of the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve.
Four international watercolor biennales "Vada + Farba," held at the gallery from 2007 to 2013, brought together dozens of artists from many countries. In 2017, a printmaking plein air was organized here, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Belarusian book printing.
The gallery's engraving workshop has no analogues in any other country in the world. Visitors can personally carve or print an engraving from the books of Francis Skorina, a family crest, or an ex-libris from a ready-made plate.
In honor of the anniversary of the Polotsk Art Gallery, with the support of the Belarusian Union of Artists, an exhibition based on the Minsk exhibition "Triennale of Contemporary Art" is being prepared. It will feature over 90 works – paintings, graphics, photography, and sculpture.
