Agrarians of the Vitebsk region have started sowing flax

The flax season has started in Belarus. Having waited out the night frosts, the agricultural producers of the Vitebsk region have also begun sowing long-staple flax. The largest areas here are cultivated by the Dubrovno Flax Mill. The majority is allocated to varieties of Belarusian selection. There are also novelties: "Rubin" and "Taler" are premieres of this season. The task is to propagate and grow them on an industrial scale.

The director of the local flax mill begins his story about the history of long-staple flax in the Dubrovno region in the restored building of the Dneprovskaya Manufactory. At the beginning of the century, one of the largest textile factories of the Russian Empire was located here. However, the specialization was different: cotton was processed here. But the traditions of strong production remained. The Dubrovno Flax Mill was the first in the region to modernize flax straw processing lines. It was the first to try imported varieties of long-staple flax and the first to test new varieties from the flax institute.

The raw material zone covers almost three thousand hectares. Before sowing, cultivators passed through the fields – an agronomic technique for "closing" the necessary moisture for flax in the soil. The seeders' hoppers were filled in the first decade of April, but the returning cold forced a slowdown. Flax loves comfort, and ground frosts are not for it. Having waited for the warmth, the machine operators went to the fields. One-third of the areas have been sown.

It has been seven years before flax growers returned to this field. It is not allowed to plant flax on the same plot more often – diseases harmful to the crop accumulate in the soil. Now, the domestic variety "Grant" is being sown. More than half of the area has been allocated for it. While the foundation for the future harvest is being laid in the field, flax shives harvested last season are being processed in the workshops. Two lines operate around the clock, seven days a week. It is important not only to harvest but also to preserve the quality of flax shives for months. In autumn, the flax mill began constructing a new storage facility – the fourth one. The facility will be commissioned very soon. 3 thousand tons of flax shives will be stored under the roof, which will reliably protect the harvested crop from rain and snow.
