Alexander Subbotin on sowing campaign: everyone is in their place and knows what to do
- Yesterday was the first night without low temperatures, - said **Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Alexander Subbotin**, explaining the reasons hindering northern farmers from starting spring sowing and the tasks they face. - Yesterday we went to the fields, we sowed about 600 hectares. Now everything is actively unfolding, serious work is beginning. Not everything is smooth in terms of readiness, but we have everything necessary to smooth out the rough edges and correct shortcomings. This year we have stocked twice as many mineral fertilizers as last year, we have taken care of seed treatments and chemical agents. Everyone is in their place and knows what to do. Additional machine operators have been mobilized to avoid equipment downtime. Everything is ready.
The head of the northern region also touched upon the priorities in crop production and the structure of sown areas:
- We are steadily reorienting towards winter crops. With a focus on the development of beef and dairy cattle breeding, we will focus on protein crops. It must be understood that a field is not a factory where everything can be changed abruptly. The transition must be smooth, crop rotation must be observed. And you can't just accumulate seeds. We are trying to implement a pilot project for sugar beets with the Gorodeya Sugar Factory, although the logistics for this crop are difficult for us to sow. Last year, we sowed several hundred hectares and obtained good yields. We decided to expand and calculate the economics. We are ready for spring sowing, but we cannot discount the weather either.
