An alley will be laid today at the Ushaсhy Forest Enterprise to mark the 130th anniversary of the Kolesov sword invention

The Ushaсhi Forestry will today lay an alley dedicated to the Russian forester Alexander Kolesov and the 130th anniversary of the invention of the Kolesov sword - a special tool for planting forests, which has not lost its relevance to this day. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the Vitebsk Regional State Production Forestry Association (RGPKHO).

The alley laying will take place within the framework of the republican subbotnik and the republican campaign "Forest Week-2013", which is being held in Belarus from April 13 to 20. In the northernmost region of the country, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the timing of this campaign has been shifted. In fact, it is only starting today (work on tidying up the land has been carried out since April 13) and will last in the region until the end of April.

The directors of all 17 forestry enterprises of the Vitebsk region, as well as the management of the RGPKHO, will take part in planting the alley. They will plant about 150 deciduous and coniferous trees. The alley is located in a dendrological park established last year, which occupies 2 hectares. Currently, its species diversity is over 60 forest crops. The Ushaсhi Forestry plans to increase it to 3,000 species.

The total number of employees of the Vitebsk Regional State Production Forestry Association is about 5.8 thousand. The main staff of employees is participating in the republican subbotnik today. Among the priority tasks is to clean up roadside areas and improve the territories of forestry enterprises.

The RGPKHO recalled that spring is the best time for creating forest crops, and forest planting is the most reliable and effective measure for artificial forest restoration. Last year, forest restoration work was carried out on an area of 4.7 thousand hectares, which amounted to 102% of the target, including by sowing and planting on an area of 4 thousand hectares. In 2013, the volumes of sowing and planting will remain at approximately the same level.

In the Vitebsk region, forest-covered lands amount to 1 million 580 thousand hectares. Forest cover is 39.5%. The average stock of stands is 185 cubic meters per hectare, and their average age is 50 years.
