A. Lukashenko: there should be no politics in the amnesty process
June 12, Minsk /Corr. BELTA/. There should be no politics in the amnesty, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated today at a meeting on the issue of amnesty for certain categories of persons who have committed crimes, BelTA correspondent reports.
The head of state emphasized: "We are carrying out an amnesty in our state and for our society. This is both a signal to society and an encouragement to prisoners. There should be no politics here."
Alexander Lukashenko recalled that when preparing the draft law on amnesty, he demanded a very objective, fair approach, devoid of any private ambitions and protectionism.
"Everything must be honest. To do this, criteria must be defined. We must act according to these criteria: someone will fall under the amnesty according to these criteria or their sentence should be reduced. And it is absolutely impossible to "pull" people there who should not be released, including for some political reasons," the President believes. -0-
