A. Lukashenko demanded to strengthen prosecutorial supervision over the enforcement of legislation by law enforcement and control bodies

August 24, Minsk /BELTA/. Head of State Alexander Lukashenko received Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus Grigory Vasilievich with a report today. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the press service of the Belarusian leader. The President was informed about the measures being taken to prevent and eradicate offenses. In 7 months of 2010, the number of particularly serious crimes in the country decreased by 11%, including murders by 20%, grievous bodily harm by 12%, and robberies by 14%. Juvenile crime also decreased by almost 13%. At the same time, a number of problems remain. For example, recidivism has not decreased, which indicates shortcomings in the work of both the prosecutor's offices, which are obliged to coordinate crime prevention efforts, and the internal affairs bodies themselves, as well as local executive and administrative bodies. The number of robberies has remained at last year's level. This year, the prosecutor's office has strengthened supervision over the activities of entities with control powers: 742 acts of prosecutorial supervision have been issued to them, and 378 officials have been brought to justice. The Head of State was also informed about the progress of work on the Concept for improving criminal liability measures and the system of serving criminal sentences. The President demanded to accelerate work on this important document, based on the fact that in modern conditions it is necessary to approach the imposition of punishments involving deprivation of liberty even more judiciously and to apply fines more widely. Alexander Lukashenko demanded to strengthen prosecutorial supervision over the enforcement of legislation by all law enforcement and control bodies, and to pay significantly more attention to how the rights and freedoms of citizens are ensured. -0-
