Silent film art project launches in Vitebsk
The unusual art project "Kinapalot", which presents a synthesis of silent cinema and experimental music, is launching in Vitebsk, as reported by Vladimir Bulavsky, a researcher at the "Vitebsk Center for Modern Art" museum.
The art project, with events scheduled from November 21 to December 19, is aimed at an interested audience – film buffs and connoisseurs of contemporary art, as well as those curious to learn more about early domestic and world cinema.
The program will feature performers who have provided soundtracks for the first Belarusian silent films as part of the "Tuzin.Nemaulya" project: "Re1ikt", Sergey Pukst, and "Tonqixod". With their live musical accompaniment, the films "Born in Fire" (1929, Vladimir Korsh-Sablin), "Kastus Kalinovsky" (1927, Vladimir Gardin), and "Hatred" (1930, Yuri Tarich) will be screened. The program also includes a performance by Egor Zabelov ("Yegor Zabelov") with music for the French silent film "The Malted" (1926, Dmitry Kirsanov). Thus, each film concert will consist of two parts: the film itself with live scoring and a set of the performer's original compositions.
The organizers explained that "Kinapalot" is a name that Vitebsk residents associate with the 1980s when a children's cinema called "Polet" operated in the city. It was located in a TU-134 aircraft on Moskovsky Prospekt. The venues for the art project's events will be the exhibition spaces of the "Vitebsk Center for Modern Art" museum – the exhibition hall at 5 Beloborodova Street and the "Art Space at 7 Tolstoy Street". The latter will host the presentation of the exhibition "250" on December 5, dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the composer and prominent public figure Michal Kleofas Oginski. This exhibition is multi-format, including film, music, sculpture, and three photo stories.
