Archaeologists have found the remains of a school in Polotsk where Francysk Skaryna studied

August 15, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Archaeologists have found the remains of the Bernardine monastery building, where Francysk Skaryna received his primary education, told BELTA correspondent Denis Duk, Head of the Department of National and World History at Polotsk State University, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, who led the excavations.

According to scientists, the famous Polotsk native learned the basics of the Latin language at the school of Bernardine monks, which operated at the monastery. Until now, the exact location of the Bernardine monastery was unknown: time has not preserved even ruins. Historians only assumed where it might be located and had a plan of the monastery. This summer, during archaeological supervision of construction work, foundation remains were discovered that coincided with the existing monastery plan. The scientists were convinced that this is indeed part of the monastery complex by the finds: church utensils belonging to the Bernardines, pottery, tiles, and book clasps.

According to Denis Duk, it is not possible to museumify the found remains of the monastery, as there is dense private development in this area, but, despite this, the tourist map of the ancient city may be supplemented with another historical point.-0-
