An archaeological reserve is planned to be created in the Tolochin district
September 22, Tolochin /Andrei Asfura - BELTA/. An archaeological reserve is planned to be created in the Tolochin district (Vitebsk region), BELTA was informed by the local district executive committee.
The reserve will be located on the territory of the Drutskoye ancient settlement, where archaeological excavations are currently underway. During the excavation of the Drutskoye burial mound, archaeologists discovered an ancient burial dating back to the 11th-12th century. Scientists believe that the Drutskoye burial mound is of unique archaeological value, as it is the only burial mound found in Eastern Europe made according to pagan rites and including a stone tombstone.
Currently, local authorities are seeking funding sources for the creation of the archaeological reserve. "This is a large-scale project. The district executive committee alone cannot handle it," they explained to BELTA.
As noted by the district administration, three excursion routes have been developed this year to develop the tourist potential of the Tolochin district. During the sightseeing tour "My Small Homeland," tourists are offered to visit the local history museum, the Holy Trinity Church, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the "Kriputevo Spring" landscape and hydrological reserve, as well as to take a dip in the holy spring bath with healing water. The excursion "Kings Trod This Land" is designed for tourists interested in the history of the Tolochin district. They are offered to visit the Drutskoye ancient settlement and the territory of the former estate of Count Menzhinsky. The thematic excursion "Industrial Tolochin" introduces visitors to the leading enterprises of the district, the production process of canned goods, cheese and dairy products, as well as mobile excavators with telescopic booms. -0-
