The Vitebsk Regional Archive plans to digitize 3 times more documents in 2019

The State Archives of the Vitebsk Region plans to digitize three times more documents of various subjects in 2019 compared to last year, said the director of the archive, Tatyana Svistunova.

Every year, the institution's specialists accept about 7,000 files for storage. But after the commissioning of a new archive repository, this figure will increase to 12,000.

"Since the beginning of 2018, after acquiring a book scanner, we have been digitizing documents ourselves. Currently, more than 400 files have been digitized in total (97 last year). This year, three times more are planned - 305. Mostly, especially valuable and frequently used documents are being digitized," noted Tatyana Svistunova. "The regional archive annually fulfills about 1,700 requests, and about 30 researchers from abroad work there. The history of the family, the study of genealogy, is now a very popular topic."

In addition, the archive has prepared a collection "Theater of Revolutionary Satire in Vitebsk". The new publication includes 183 documents from 1918-1921 from the archives of Belarus and Russia, most of which are published for the first time. The collection is supplemented with articles by specialists on this topic. The State Archives of the Vitebsk Region stores documents of organizations that operated in the Vitebsk province, district, and region from 1917 to the present day.

As of today, the archive has collected over 1.3 million documents. The archive's zone includes Vitebsk with its district, Beshenkovichi, Chashniki, Gorodok, Liozno, and Shumyly districts. The remaining regions of the oblast are within the competence of the zonal state archives in the cities of Glubokoye, Polotsk, and Orsha.
