Belarus has preserved strong scientific schools in the field of materials science - Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences

September 28, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. Belarus has preserved strong scientific schools that are actively developing various areas in materials science. This opinion was expressed in a conversation with a BELTA correspondent by RAS Academy of Sciences academician, Director of the G. Kurdyumov Institute of Materials Science and Metal Physics (Moscow), Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Alexander Glezer. He is taking part in the 50th international scientific symposium "Actual Problems of Strength," which is being held today in Vitebsk. "The contributions of Belarusian scientists in the field of physics of strength and plasticity of materials are undeniable, which is why we gladly cooperate in various research areas in this field that are of mutual interest," emphasized Alexander Glezer. Belarusian and Russian scientists constantly hold joint conferences and implement joint projects, including in the field of powder metallurgy, research of functional materials, and nanomaterials. This cooperation has deep roots, is characterized by stability, and is developing successfully, the academician added. Today, scientists specializing in the physics of strength and plasticity of materials face a number of problems, the solutions to which will be significantly facilitated by the results of the international symposium in Vitebsk, believes Alexander Glezer. First of all, it is about the reliability of materials and the study of material behavior under the influence of various external threats. It is no longer enough to obtain a material with a certain strength and plasticity. It is necessary for these characteristics to be maintained during the operation of a product made from it. The second pressing problem is the creation of materials with a unique combination of properties, multifunctional materials, for example, possessing both strength and corrosion resistance, radiation resistance, etc. Another promising task is the creation of fundamentally new structural states of materials that cannot be obtained in nature, i.e., materials with unusual properties. "This is a task for the future, but quite a realistic one, as we already have examples of the use of exotic materials in practice today. For example, magnetic nanomaterials are actively used in electronics and instrument engineering," the scientist noted. More than 150 scientists and specialists from research centers, scientific and educational institutions of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, and China are participating in the scientific forum "Actual Problems of Strength." The symposium discusses the results of theoretical and experimental research in the field of physics and mechanics of strength, which make it possible to predict the most complex properties of materials, create nanomaterials with improved structure, and develop new surface coatings with high functional properties. The forum will serve as a platform for presenting the latest developments in materials science, as well as innovative technologies for obtaining and processing materials. The symposium is organized by the Institute of Technical Acoustics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Vitebsk State Technological University, with the assistance of the Interstate Coordination Council for the Physics of Strength and Plasticity of Materials, the Ministry of Education of Belarus, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the State Committee on Science and Technology of Belarus, the RAS Scientific Council on the Physics of Condensed Matter, and the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.-0-
