Over the past week, Belarusian customs officers have established three cases of illegal import of small arms bullets into Belarus. A total of 20,000 units were seized
Earlier, Grodno customs officers seized 13,000 bullets from a Belarusian citizen, and in the two most recent cases, Brest and Vitebsk customs officers seized another seven thousand from a citizen of Belarus and a Lithuanian carrier.
For instance, a Belarusian citizen attempted to import over a thousand bullets of various calibers into the country, concealing them from customs control under the passenger seat of his car. The 35-year-old citizen was traveling from Poland through the "Brest" border crossing point. He chose the green corridor to cross the border, claiming to have no goods subject to declaration.
Brest customs officers doubted his statement and decided to inspect the vehicle. As a result, a batch of bullets was found in a hidden compartment equipped between the frame and upholstery of the passenger seat.
Another batch was discovered by Vitebsk customs officers in the cavity of the refrigeration unit of a reefer trailer traveling from Lithuania through the Belarusian-Latvian border.
The truck of the Lithuanian carrier crossed the border through the "Grigorovshchina" border crossing point.
An inspection and screening complex helped locate the hidden compartment with the bullets. As a result of further inspection, six thousand bullets were retrieved from the cavity of the refrigeration unit.
Brest and Vitebsk customs have initiated administrative proceedings in accordance with Part 2 of Article 15.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus.
