Beshankovichy – Potential of Opportunities. ATN Report

Our country is often called a place of risky farming, especially the Vitebsk region. However, the Beshenkovichi district, located right in the center of the northern region, seems to break this stereotype. The district is the smallest in area in the region, but its potential is huge. Today, foreigners are investing in the beautiful landscapes of the Vitebsk region, building hotels. And one of the pharmaceutical companies has launched production there.

Beshenkovichi district is in the center of the Vitebsk region and is the smallest in area in the region. Slightly more than 14 thousand people live here. The figure is almost equally divided between urban and rural populations. Having seen the landscapes of the Vitebsk region at least once – the mirror of lakes surrounded by dense greenery – it is difficult to remain indifferent. Therefore, it is not surprising that foreign businessmen invest money here to develop services, earn money, and return to their favorite places…

This recreation center is no exception: successfully invested Russian money is working here. Before that, it was an abandoned pioneer camp surrounded by silver springs. Hence the name. Investments are made not only in the development of the tourism industry… In Beshenkovichi, investors from 4 countries have united – Lithuania, Latvia, India, and Belarus. The result is an innovative complex for the production of anti-cancer drugs. It combines import substitution and export. Specialists from both Vitebsk and Beshenkovichi are working here. The staff is planned to be expanded.

They select specialists while they are in their 3rd-4th year of university; if they see interest and strong preparation, they invite them for an internship.

Mikhail is one of these students. He works as a process engineer. He is responsible for the correct proportion of components and compliance with rules during the manufacturing of medications.
Let's turn to folk medicine. There are over a hundred beekeepers in the Beshenkovichi district. This is both self-employment and additional income. And for some, it's a passion... Now, not only honey but also beekeeping products are in demand. 10 years ago, no one paid attention to this. Now, bee bread, pollen, propolis – everything is valued. Just like health. Mikhail Valentinovich is on good terms with bees. He heads the district beekeepers' society. When he decided to increase his striped population, his neighbors were unhappy, so he had to buy a house in an abandoned village and move everyone there. Thus, the farmstead was populated by bees. And here are a couple of life hacks for beekeeping therapy.

Professionals decide everything: both how to revive the soil and how to inspire it for new large harvests.

The abandoned land was bought this year by the "Terra Nostra" farm. Previously, they worked indirectly with the land – mostly buying and selling equipment, spare parts, and related items. This year, they are cultivatingall 4 thousand hectares - not a single patch was forgotten. And it's still not enough; they took the same amount in the neighboring district. Dmitry, after 15 years of working with land, knows how to fertilize and please it, working based on data from experimental plots. Grain is sown on them, and new methods of plant care are tested - a small research institute within the farm. He doesn't follow book advice or seasonality - he works based on the needs of specific plots.

Lyudmila Petrovna has 40 years in agriculture - she treats her work with reverence, as well as people. She heads one of the best enterprises in the district - they specialize in milk, so they know how to feed a cow qualitatively and compose a menu correctly. They don't complain about wages. It's piece-rate, which means you get paid for what you do.

This enterprise is 3 decades old. They manufacture multi-fuel boilers - burning not just wood chips, but also peat and waste - a serious step in the development of small energy for housing and communal services. This year, they mastered the production of filters for industrial gas purification. A new stage of development began in 2011, after the President's visit. At that time, funds were allocated from the Belarusian Innovation Fund, and new equipment was purchased. This is the brain of the enterprise and the workplace of programmers. It is they who breathe soul into heavy metal, making it pliable, easy to use, and more mobile.

No matter how much we keep up with the times, history and the past always influence the present

The life of the Beshenkovichi district is connected with the river. It is believed that the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks passed here. And in the 17th century, it was in Beshenkovichi that the largest pier on the Western Dvina was built. The Western Dvina divided Beshenkovichi. To get from one bank to the other - there used to be a ferry service, now a pontoon crossing like this is installed for the spring-autumn period. But in November, it is removed, and people move across the ice or by boat; the profession of a boatman is still relevant here.

District services, pharmacies, the hospital, and banks are on one bank of the river. It seems to be within reach, but how to cross the Dvina if there is no permanent bridge, and going around is a detour of a hundred kilometers. While this is a problem for the residents, they hope the authorities will be able to solve it. The district boasts not only lakes and the winding Dvina River. Hunting tours organized by the local hunting reserve are popular with tourists from neighboring countries. It's a vacation not for the faint of heart, but for people with steely patience.

For some, it's a vacation, and for the district, it's a profitable business and an addition to the budget

We were fortunate enough to experience the mystery of this activity. During the day, in the heat, animals sleep, and only at night do they become active. Therefore, we set out for the hunt after sunset, but without rifles – with a video camera and binoculars. Galina Vladimirovna took charge of the district in mid-March. Previously, she worked in the Gluboksky district – she got interested in horses – at an amateur level. She last rode a horse 3 years ago; this time, we put her on a horse. Presumably, the name Beshenkovichi comes from the word "beshen," which literally translates to "fast current in the middle of the river." Today, the district strives for the same rapid development. The main thing here is to choose the right vector.
