The Epiphany Cathedral in Polotsk received bells as a gift from parishioners
September 18, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The Epiphany Cathedral in Polotsk has received four new bells as a gift from its parishioners. Today they were hoisted onto the temple's belfry, the Ideological Work Department of the Polotsk City Executive Committee informed a BELTA correspondent.
All four bells - the largest weighing over 800 kg and the smallest barely reaching 10 kg - were cast at a Belarusian enterprise with voluntary donations from believers. Previously, there were only three bells on the belfry. Now, with the installation of the new ones, the temple has a full set of seven bells, and the ringing will sound as intended during the construction of the cathedral.
It is noteworthy that the Epiphany Cathedral itself was built in 1761-1779 with donations from townspeople. Once, the church was part of the Epiphany Men's Monastery, a center of Orthodoxy in Polotsk. In the 17th century, a brotherhood school operated at the monastery, where Symeon of Polotsk taught. The monastery building, preserved to this day, houses the Symeon of Polotsk Museum-Library and the only Museum of Book Printing in Belarus. The Epiphany Church was restored in 1981 and housed the city art gallery. In 1991, the church was returned to believers. -0-
