More than 120 wartime ammunition items neutralized in Vitebsk

March 15, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. More than 120 munitions from the Great Patriotic War have been neutralized in Vitebsk, the regional Internal Affairs Directorate's information and public relations department told a BELTA correspondent. The explosive items were discovered during excavation work at the site of a social and cultural facility under construction on Chkalov Street. While preparing the foundation pit, construction workers stumbled upon metal objects resembling shells. Specialists from the sapper-pyrotechnic group of military unit 5524 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who arrived at the scene, determined that these were Soviet-made "AO-8" aerial bombs. Initially, sappers unearthed 10 bombs lying scattered in the ground, and then they came across neatly stacked munitions. It is presumed that an airfield with infrastructure, including ammunition depots, was located here during the war, and the construction workers likely stumbled upon one of these depots. The munitions were transported to a safe location and destroyed. -0-
