May 5, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA /. More than 300 teachers and students of Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov will take part in a track and field race today, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Victory and the 100th anniversary of VSU. For the first time, the event's route will run along Pobedy Avenue in the regional center, Irina Bondal, Vice-Rector for Educational Work at VSU, told a BELTA correspondent.
The start will be preceded by a rally at the "Order of Victory" monument, which will be attended by over 1,000 university teachers and students. The main goal of the event, which will be held in an updated format, is to perpetuate the memory of the heroic feat during the war years, as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle and involve the younger generation in active physical education. Winners and prize-winners of the race will be awarded diplomas and valuable prizes. The award ceremony will take place at the "Order of Victory" monument.
The sporting event will be the culmination of honoring veterans, child prisoners, and participants of the Siege of Leningrad, who in different years have linked their working careers with the Vitebsk university. Today, the university will host a ceremonial reception of veterans with Rector Alexander Solodkov, after which flowers will be laid at the university's Military Glory Stele. Amateur art groups from the faculties have prepared a festive concert for the honored VSU employees, which will include children of teachers.
On the eve of the event, a delegation of veterans led by the chairman of the university's veterans organization, Artur Mateyun, visited memorable and memorial sites of military glory in the Vitebsk and Mogilev regions. For the 65th anniversary of Victory, the university has held thematic exhibitions of student works dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War, quizzes, competitions, and military-sports games. Students participated in labor brigades to improve the condition of military glory monuments, obelisks, and graves, and provided assistance to veterans at their homes. -0-
