More than 500 mini landfills have been closed since 2010 in the Vitebsk region
To improve the situation in this area, 4 new landfills for solid municipal waste (SMW) were built and commissioned in the region: in the urban-type settlement of Богушевск (2013), Глубокое (2014), Чашники (2014), and Лепель (2016). In Novopolotsk, for this purpose, the production unitary enterprise "Biomekhzavod of household secondary resources" was commissioned in 2010. The enterprise collects and transports municipal waste in the Полоцк district and Novopolotsk, sorts waste, collects secondary material resources, and utilizes polymer waste. It also produces sand-polymer products and PET flakes.
In Vitebsk, a waste sorting plant was built in 2020, designed for receiving and semi-automatic sorting of mixed SMW from Vitebsk with a capacity of 100 thousand tons per year.
Overall, the utilization rate of production waste in the region has increased from 63% to 85.3% compared to 2010. Over 100 enterprises in the region are currently registered in the republican registry of waste utilization facilities. Wood waste and flax shives are widely used as fuel, polymer waste utilization is carried out at 10 enterprises, and construction waste recycling has been established.
In the Vitebsk region, serious attention is paid to the implementation of tasks from republican and regional action plans for improving the land and landscaping of settlements, the committee emphasized. Significant volumes of work in this area are performed annually in preparation for the "Dazhynki" rural workers' festivals and fairs. As a result, settlements in the Vitebsk region have repeatedly received awards based on the results of the republican review of the sanitary condition and landscaping of settlements.
