More than two dozen bodies of water are at risk of pollution from manure runoff from farms in the Dubrovno district
June 10, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. The number of agricultural enterprises violating environmental legislation is increasing in the Vitebsk region. This opinion was expressed to a BELTA correspondent by Valentina Khodosevich, Senior Assistant Prosecutor of the Vitebsk Region for Supervision of Environmental Legislation Enforcement.
Thus, in the second quarter of 2009, the prosecutor's office of the Vitebsk region conducted an inspection of compliance in the region with legislation on prohibitions and restrictions of economic activities in water protection zones and coastal strips of water bodies. Numerous violations were then identified in the operation of 63 livestock farms.
In order to control their elimination, prosecutors re-inspected the activities of agricultural enterprises. The results of the latest review of the situation turned out to be even more disappointing: facts of mismanagement, which pose a real threat to natural resources, were established at 134 facilities located in Tolochinsky, Lepelsky, Vitebsky, Chashniksky, Dokshitsky, Polotsky, Lioznensky, Miorsky, Beshenkovichsky, Senno, Orshansky, Braslavsky, Gorodoksky, Verkhnedvinsky, Postavsky and Dubrovensky districts. At the same time, in the latter region, for example, due to the negligent attitude of farm managers to the issue of compliance with environmental legislation, a serious threat of pollution from manure runoff to 21 water bodies, including 14 rivers, has emerged, emphasized Valentina Khodosevich.
Based on the results of the inspection, the prosecutor's office of the Vitebsk region has prepared 78 acts of prosecutorial response, including 17 submissions and 61 orders. 84 instructions have been sent to environmental control bodies for the preparation of cases on administrative offenses. -0-
