April 29, Verkhnedvinsk district / Sergei Kochetov - BELTA/. Belarusian Railway plans to invest about Br600 billion in infrastructure development on the section from the Russian border to Polotsk and Bigosovo. This was announced to journalists today by the head of Belarusian Railway Anatoly Sivak after the ceremony of opening train traffic on the second track on the section Bigosovo (Verkhnedvinsk district) - Indra (Latvia), BELTA correspondent reports.
Investments will be directed towards the construction of second tracks, the equipping with modern technical means, traffic management, communication and safety control. The construction of double-track sections on this route is planned to be completed by 2016. This will make it possible to double the throughput capacity of the railway section and to transport an additional over 13 million tons of cargo per year. Railway communication with Latvia is a strategically important direction for Belarusian Railway, Anatoly Sivak noted.
The development of infrastructure on this section will enhance the competitiveness and commercial attractiveness of railway transport for freight transportation. In addition, it creates a basis for the future organization of passenger traffic between Belarus and Latvia. "In January of this year, we discussed this issue with the management of Latvian Railway and will seek ways to resolve it," Anatoly Sivak added. -0-
