For Polotsk, the title of the cultural capital of Belarus is recognition and a great responsibility – V. Tochilo
January 18, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The designation of Polotsk as the cultural capital of Belarus in 2010 is a recognition of the merits of Polotsk natives and a huge responsibility for the city's current residents. This point of view was expressed in a conversation with a BELTA correspondent today by the Chairman of the Polotsk City Executive Committee, Vladimir Tochilo.
"Polotsk residents perceive this title not only as a high award, as recognition of their merits in preserving the cultural and historical values inherited from our great predecessors, but also as a huge responsibility," admitted Vladimir Tochilo. Polotsk rightfully became the first cultural capital of Belarus. Belarusian statehood originates from here, the sources of Belarusian spirituality and identity are here. Unique architectural monuments have survived to this day - the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Transfiguration Church, built in the 12th century according to the design of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk with frescoes dating back nine centuries. In the coming year, Polotsk will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the transfer of the relics of Saint Euphrosyne from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to the St. Euphrosyne Monastery.
"The title of cultural capital obliges us to a lot. We must improve in all areas," emphasized Vladimir Tochilo. In 2010, the city will undertake higher production targets and continue the implementation of a comprehensive program for the city's development until 2012. Serious tasks are set for the development of social infrastructure, sports and tourism. Based on the results of 2009, the city with a population of 80,000 was visited by over 1 million tourists, however, this figure should be several times higher, the mayor added.
It is noteworthy that Polotsk was awarded the right to be called the first capital of Belarusian writing. As Vladimir Tochilo hopes, by launching the republican campaign "Cultural Capital of Belarus" on January 21, the ancient city will lay a good foundation for a wonderful tradition.
The "Cultural Capital of Belarus" project was initiated by the Ministry of Culture. It is carried out to support the cultural life of the regions. Throughout the year, small towns designated as cultural capitals will become venues for concert performances by the best ensembles and artists, and will provide halls for exhibitions of artists' works. Such a project will give residents of small towns the opportunity to get acquainted with cultural values and the best examples of Belarusian art.
Throughout the year, Polotsk will host exhibitions from the collections of the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus, an exhibition of works by Belarusian artist Ivan Khrutsky, and books by Francysk Skaryna. Paintings by masters of the brush from Russia, Lithuania, Greece, and Germany will also be exhibited here. Concerts by the best soloists and ensembles of the Belarusian State Philharmonic Society are planned. The National Academic Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus will invite to its traditional event "Masterpieces of Opera Art at the Walls of Ancient Sophia" in the summer. In May, the opening of a monument to the Heroes of the War of 1812 in Polotsk is planned, which is being recreated with funds from the Union State.-0-
