An experimental state-of-the-art tram has entered service in Novopolotsk

Экспериментальный суперсовременный трамвай вышел на линию в Новополоцке

A state-of-the-art experimental tram, developed and manufactured by Minsk-based "Belkommunmash," has been launched in Novopolotsk, a correspondent of BELTA reports.

As reported by Elena Tsikhelashvili, head of the rolling stock operation department at NTKUP "Tram Park," such cars have not yet been operated in Belarusian cities with tram traffic. After a long period of commissioning, the latest model of a single-section, semi-low-floor tram car has finally set off with passengers on the city's only route. This development could not only form the basis for Belarus's rail electric transport but also provide "Belkommunmash" with substantial export orders.

The BKM-802 model is an inexpensive alternative to the three-section, high-capacity, high-speed tram BKM-843 and is intended for operation on routes with low passenger traffic in small cities. The car is 15.5 meters long and has a total capacity of 165 people: 28 seats (including 4 for passengers with reduced mobility), 137 standing passengers, and one space in the middle of the cabin for a stroller or wheelchair with fixation and driver notification systems.

"Everything inside is electronic: synchronized visual and acoustic information systems for passengers, a thermostat in the cabin, and an air conditioner in the driver's cabin are installed. The lighting is LED. The low-floor design in the middle of the car is convenient for passengers, facilitating boarding and alighting. The car accelerates well and brakes smoothly. We will see how it performs during active operation, especially in the first three warranty years. This tram, along with two other cars, will serve the line during the day," explained Elena Tsikhelashvili.

In total, the Novopolotsk transport enterprise's fleet of passenger cars numbers 31 units, of which 9 are put into service in the morning, during peak hours. During the day, three cars are sufficient to serve the passenger traffic.
