The energy intensity of Belarus's GDP decreased by more than 26% in 2006-2010.
February 9, Vitebsk / Sergei Kochetov - BELTA /. The energy intensity of Belarus's GDP in 2006-2010 decreased by more than 26%, in line with the five-year forecast. This was announced today by Leonid Shenets, Director of the Department for Energy Efficiency of the State Committee for Standardization, at the international exhibition-conference "Energy and Resource Saving Technologies, Equipment and Materials" in Vitebsk, according to a BELTA correspondent.
"We have met the five-year forecast, although this period was challenging, especially 2010, when due to adverse weather conditions and low temperatures in January-February, there was an increase in heat energy consumption, and the low capacity utilization of industrial enterprises also had an impact," noted Leonid Shenets. The task of replacing imported fuels and increasing the share of domestic resources has also been fulfilled. According to the results of 2010, the share of local fuels in Belarus's fuel and energy balance was 20.6%.
In 2010, due to the implementation of energy-saving measures, Belarus saved almost 1.47 million tons of conventional fuel (tce), with about 30% of the economic effect obtained through production modernization and the introduction of energy-saving technologies. However, there are still shortcomings: it is necessary to accelerate the implementation of technological solutions in energy saving, and the problem of abnormal losses in heat networks needs to be addressed at an accelerated pace, believes Leonid Shenets. A large amount of work also needs to be done to modernize the energy sector. Currently, about 15 million tce are spent on obtaining heat and electricity in the Belenergo system, so modernizing the energy sector and introducing energy-saving technologies will also provide an opportunity to achieve a significant economic effect, he added. -0-
