Farms must offer an exclusive product - Nikolai Sherstnev

The potential for the development of farms and eco-farms is high, but they must offer an exclusive product. This was stated today to journalists by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Nikolai Sherstnev, at a press conference dedicated to the development of the region's agro-industrial complex and the holding of the regional festival-fair of agricultural workers "Dazhynki".

According to the Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee, there are currently 376 peasant (farm) holdings in the region. Despite positive development dynamics, their share in the total volume of agricultural production in the region remains insignificant, accounting for 0.8%, including crop production - 1.5%, and livestock production - 0.3%. "Their development potential is huge, but they must produce exclusive types of products, complementing our main agricultural enterprises. It is gratifying that some farmers specializing in vegetables (onions, cabbage, potatoes) have found their niche and are working productively," noted Nikolai Sherstnev.

The Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee considers the development of sheep farming to be one of the relevant areas, taking into account the recently launched fur complex. "Currently, 32 farm holdings are engaged in sheep breeding, including five with a herd of over 200 heads," he noted. The trend towards a healthy lifestyle and, consequently, healthy eating is also gaining increasing popularity, which entails the development of organic agriculture and green technologies. "We have prospects for the development of such farms, the regulatory framework is prepared, it is up to the farmers themselves. We, for our part, are ready to provide the necessary support," added the Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee.
