Head of Vitebsk region Alexander Subbotin took part in planting a cedar grove

In the Year of Historical Memory and the 77th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, at the Kurgan of Immortality in Polotsk, the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Subbotin, took part in planting a cedar grove.

Students of the Polotsk Forestry College, who came to this event with their teachers, told the guests about their understanding of the significance of the Great Victory: each tree here will become a symbol of memory and gratitude from the peaceful generation to the military generation. Not only the head of the region, but also the Chairman of the Polotsk District Executive Committee, Igor Markovich, war veterans Albert Zbarovsky, Alexander Rastopchin, and the Chairman of the District Veterans Organization, Galina Muravey, took a direct part in planting fluffy young cedars together with the younger generation of Polotsk residents.

– The creation of the cedar grove will be a living symbol of memory and reverence for the heroism of the Fatherland's defenders, a reminder to all of us of the feat of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, – said Alexander Subbotin. – No matter how busy our days are, in such weather, each of us can plant 5-6 trees. Look: everyone is smiling, the sun is shining, and we are doing a noble deed, planting trees that will remain for our children and grandchildren.

In response to a question from a "VV" correspondent, Alexander Subbotin said that his family was also touched by the war: both of his grandfathers fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, one was a tankman, the other reached Berlin in a front-line truck.

– There is probably not a single family in Belarus whose annals of history do not contain tragic pages and wounds inflicted by that terrible war, – said Alexander Subbotin. – Therefore, the memory of it is a cementing force that unites us and makes us stronger.
