The main square of Polotsk has turned into an archaeological site
July 20, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. The main square of Polotsk has turned into an archaeological site: for the first time, archaeologists have begun to explore soil layers in the city center on Svobody Square, near the city executive committee. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by the head of the excavations, Head of the Department of Domestic and World History of Polotsk State University, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Denis Duk.
During the current archaeological expedition, researchers confirmed information that a wealthy residential area and a market square were located on this site in the 17th century. Archaeologists found an ancient wooden pavement and numerous artifacts: from coins and beads to unique bivalve reliquary pectoral crosses, which were found in Polotsk only once, in the 19th century. Archaeologists were also pleased with the perfectly preserved blacksmith tongs, which, according to Denis Duk, do not even need restoration.
Specialists also explored the remains of the foundation of the monument to the heroes of the War of 1812. The monument is planned to be restored by the 200th anniversary of the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812 in the same place where the original stood. Archaeologists concluded that the monument was blown up almost to the ground.
According to the scientist, the excavations will continue. The found items give hope for new discoveries. Researchers expect to reach the layer of the 12th-13th centuries.
The archaeological expedition of Polotsk State University is working in conjunction with the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences. The comprehensive program for the development of the city for 2008-2012, approved by a decree of the head of state, provides for the organization of a permanent archaeological expedition to study the Polotsk land since 2008, which allows for systematic work to uncover ancient layers. -0-
