Hlybokaye claims the title of the cherry capital of Belarus
Glubokoye is preparing to declare itself the cherry capital of Belarus. But first, it will hold a cherry festival, the preparations for which have already begun, as reported to a BELTA correspondent by the Department of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Glubokoye District Executive Committee.
In the Vitebsk region, it is widely known that it is difficult to find cherries tastier than those from Glubokoye. Once, cherry orchards in the Glubokoye district were established by a local landowner-breeder Laper, who brought seedlings from Poland. It was from his gardens that the juicy, sweet, and frost-resistant cherry first spread to the local peasant households, and then throughout the region. To this day, the cherry fame of Glubokoye is passed down by word of mouth and attracts many thrifty hosts to the town during the harvest season.
Local organizers of tourist recreation have decided to use cherries for their purposes and hold a cherry festival in mid-summer. Fortunately, the city has a good tourist infrastructure, thanks to Belarusian Written Language Day held here in September. The festival program is already being developed. It will include a culinary show, entertainment programs with a cherry theme, but the main event will be a cherry fair. In the spring, the residents of Glubokoye plan to establish a cherry orchard with trees from different parts of the world.
The Glubokoye project "Cherry Festival" took second place in the recently concluded republican competition of creative works for the promotion of cities and regions of Belarus within the framework of the III International Forum "Image of the Republic of Belarus: Time to Act". According to experts, this project will attract attention to the region, increase tourist flow, and most importantly, create a new tourist brand. As a reward, the development of the Glubokoye cherry brand will be handled by the prize-winner of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, the advertising agency "Kryn".
It is worth noting that cherries are loved everywhere, which is why cherry festivals are held in many countries: in the USA, there are two such festivals – in Washington and Traverse City; in Croatia, Lovran is considered the cherry capital; in Lithuania, the town of Zagare; and in Russia, Vladimir.
