Grunwald Street appeared on the master plan for the development of a new residential microdistrict in Polotsk
December 8, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. Grunwald Street has appeared on the master plan for the development of a new residential area in Polotsk, Deputy Chairman of the Polotsk City Executive Committee Nikolai Ilyushenok told a BELTA correspondent.
The decision to name the street was made by deputies of the Polotsk City Council after public discussion. According to Nikolai Ilyushenok, the development of Grunwald Street will begin in 2011, which means the first street sign with the street name will appear.
The idea of Grunwald Street appearing in Polotsk belongs to the Polotsk Community. Its members believed that this would be a way to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the famous battle in Polotsk, which was celebrated in 2010. In that distant battle, the united forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland defeated the army of the Teutonic Order. Belarusian banners made a huge contribution to the Grunwald victory. The Polotsk regiment was one of the largest and best-armed among them. The courage of the Polotsk residents did not go unnoticed by contemporaries or historians.
It is noteworthy that all the street names in the new residential area are related to the history of Polotsk. Very recently, Ivan Khrutsky Street appeared here - a famous artist, a native of the Polotsk land, Brigade Commander Alexei Zygin Street, under whose command Soviet soldiers heroically defended Polotsk in the summer of 1941, and the avenue of architect Ioann, who created the Savior-Transfiguration Church in the 12th century.
According to Nikolai Ilyushenok, by enriching the city's toponymy, ancient Polotsk follows European principles of street naming: naming streets after those who glorified this region. "In this way, we are forming the image of Polotsk as a city where the past is remembered and honored, and the present is proud of," the interlocutor emphasized.
Soon, proposals for naming two more new streets in Polotsk will be submitted for public discussion. -0-
