The names of 67 Red Army soldiers will be immortalized in Novopolotsk

On the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, the names of 67 Red Army soldiers will be immortalized at the "Zvezda" memorial complex in Novopolotsk, as reported by the Novopolotsk City Executive Committee.

– The unveiling of the memorial plaques will take place during a rally that will gather representatives of local authorities, the public, and youth at the memorial site on this day. During the solemn ceremony, attendees will pay tribute to the memory and respect the military valor and courage of the Soviet people in the fight against fascism. For the younger generations, this event will serve as another reminder of the feat of the Belarusian people in the Great Patriotic War, the need to cherish the independence of their Motherland, and to have clear spiritual guidelines, – the City Executive Committee noted.

The names of the soldiers were identified thanks to a unique find: in February 2020, a notebook was found in the Borovukha microdistrict containing records of a doctor from the hospital of the German stationary camp for prisoners of war and civilians, Stalag No. 354. It contained biographical data of about 400 soldiers. The surnames of 106 Red Army soldiers have already been verified and immortalized on the memorial plaques. This was facilitated by meticulous work established with the administrations of 43 regions of Russia, public organizations, and search teams.

Currently, as a result of joint efforts, 10 relatives of the fallen have been identified. Some of them have expressed a desire to come to Novopolotsk on February 23 to participate in the commemorative event.

A significant event preceding the Day of Defenders of the Fatherland in the life of the city was a video conference held on February 18, which brought together relatives of prisoners of war who died in Stalag No. 354, representatives of administrations, heads of search organizations, public associations of a patriotic orientation from regions of Russia and Belarus, as well as researchers and historians from Polotsk and Kemerovo State Universities. The event was based on the results of search activities to establish information about natives of Russia who died in Stalag No. 354.
During the Great Patriotic War, a large German garrison was located in the village of Borovukha. It was here that the Nazis also organized the Stalag concentration camp.№ 354. It is known that tens of thousands of Soviet soldiers and local residents died there. The names of most of them and the exact number have not been established. However, work in this direction is carried out on a permanent basis. In 2005, the "Zvezda" memorial complex was erected at the site where victims of fascism perished.
