Research by Belarusian and Russian scientists will allow the production of nanomaterials with improved properties

October 14, Vitebsk / Sergey Kochetov - BELTA/. Joint research by scientists from the Institute of Technical Acoustics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (ITA) and the Institute of Problems of Superplasticity of Metals of the Russian Academy of Sciences will create a scientific basis for obtaining nanomaterials with improved properties. This was reported to a BELTA correspondent by Yuri Tsarenko, Deputy Director of ITA for Scientific and Innovation Work. The research is dedicated to the study of bulk nanostructuring processes of materials subjected to ultrasonic treatment, and ultimately is related to solving one of the urgent problems facing materials scientists. This concerns increasing the service life of structural materials operating in harsh conditions. One of the promising solutions to this problem is the possibility of modifying the material's structure under various external influences. Joint work was initiated by scientists from Belarusian and Russian institutes in 2009. As a result, the fundamental possibility of using ultrasonic effects to modify the microstructure and properties of nanomaterials was established, and the processes occurring in the material during ultrasonic treatment were studied. Currently, scientists are focusing their efforts on studying the mechanisms of structural changes in nanomaterials and determining the optimal modes of their ultrasonic treatment, which will allow achieving the highest thermal stability and plasticity combined with high strength in nanomaterials. The results of joint fundamental research should lay the scientific basis for obtaining new materials with enhanced structural and functional properties. In addition, during joint research, scientists will exchange experience in creating new materials and their processing methods, which will contribute to the development of materials science technologies and their use in Belarus and Russia, noted Yuri Tsarenko. The research is carried out within the framework of a joint grant from the Belarusian and Russian Foundations for Basic Research, led by Doctor of Technical Sciences Vasily Rubanik from the Belarusian side and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Rafik Mulyukov from the Russian side. The Institute of Technical Acoustics was founded in Vitebsk in 1975. One of the main directions of the institute's scientific activity is the study of the effect of concentrated energy flows (ultrasound, laser, magnetic field plasma) on condensed media. In the field of research on ultrasonic treatment of metals and alloys, ITA is one of the leading scientific centers in the CIS. The institute's scientists develop methods and high-energy technologies for obtaining functional and special-purpose materials. -0-
