Results of the WHO European Regional Office press briefing in Minsk

The World Health Organization welcomes the measures taken by Belarus to combat COVID-19, said the head of the WHO mission in Belarus, Patrick O'Connor, reports BELTA.

Patrick O'Connor noted such important measures as laboratory testing, isolation of people with confirmed coronavirus, and quarantine for contact persons who could potentially be exposed to the virus. At the same time, according to him, it is important to strengthen these measures. In particular, the WHO recommends taking steps for physical distancing of the population. This includes remote learning and reducing non-essential travel. This can slow down and prevent the spread of the virus, and allow healthcare institutions to increase their capacity and potential.

"From our recommendations, it follows that we recommend, in addition to the measures being taken, ensuring physical distancing. This does not necessarily mean quarantine and curfew," he added.

According to the Minister of Health Vladimir Karanik, at the moment it is not necessary to introduce strict quarantine measures. However, if everyone limits their non-essential contacts and implements social distancing measures, it will be possible to prevent a snowballing increase in the incidence.
