How will Shumilino be transformed for "Dazhynki-2021"?

The regional festival-fair of villagers "Dazhynki" will be held in Shumilino next year. According to tradition, large-scale improvement will be carried out in its capital on the eve of the holiday. What specific metamorphoses are expected in Shumilino?

According to Yuri Vizhikovskiy, the chief architect of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, it is planned to transform at least 49 facilities. Perhaps the main ones are the central square (opposite the district executive committee) and the adjacent park with a playground and a memorial zone near Korotkina Street.

– Currently, the memorial zone is divided into 2 parts. One has monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, and the other has an alley with portraits of honorary citizens of the city, – says Yuri Cheslavovich. – It is planned to move the Alley of Heroes to the central path leading to the military burials. In addition, along this alley, it is planned to renew the trees planted by the war participants with commemorative plaques, as many trees are in unsatisfactory condition and are subject to felling. For now, these trees grow along the sidewalk of Korotkina Street, and the fence obscures the plaques. The trees will compositionally support the entrance group to the park, which will be in the form of a colonnade of eight columns, covered by a stylobate.

The central park and the playground are also planned to be significantly transformed.

– Nowadays, the children's town has, let's say, a unique landscape design and morally outdated equipment. Instead, comfortable conditions for recreation for children of different ages will be created: simulators, children's towns, and thematic playgrounds will be installed, – continues Yuri Cheslavovich. – Also, perhaps, small architectural forms – topiary sculptures – will appear there.

Nearby is a city square for mass events. The stage will be slightly moved deeper into the park and improved. Currently, the square is separated from the children's town by a roadway. According to the interlocutor, it is planned to create a pedestrian zone here, and for safety reasons, access to administrative buildings will be organized from the other side.

Here, architects propose to decorate Shumilino with architectural forms unusual for Belarusian cities and district centers – to install pergolas. This is a structure made of metal or wood, where the walls and roof will be represented by climbing plants.

– Roses or grapes are usually hung on pergolas, which grow and envelop the structure, – explains Yuri Vyzhikovsky. – In hot weather, it is very pleasant to go inside and be in the shade of climbing plants. Such small architectural forms are very popular in Chinese cities.

On the other side of Korotkina Street is the library. It will undergo current repairs, including facade painting and landscaping of the adjacent territory. It is planned to plant greenery and lay tiles on the paths, especially in places where people have worn paths.

Of course, the landscaping will not only concern the central part of Shumilino.

– 35 courtyard areas on Yubileynaya, 70 let BSSR, Kooperativnaya, Sipko, Lunacharskogo, 40 let Oktyabrya, Vokzalnaya, and Dubosarskaya streets will be improved, – lists Yuri Vyzhikovsky. – Current road repairs are planned on Sipko and Suvorov streets. Korotkina and some other streets will have asphalt pavement repaired. It is also planned to extend the noise barrier to the end of the private sector development along the Vitebsk – Polotsk highway. Of course, as an architect, I believe that this does not add beauty, but the maximum possible convenience for residents should be provided. And the existing barriers will be cleaned and painted.
