The capsule with a message to descendants from the Mound of Eternal Glory in Polotsk will be opened in 2017

A time capsule with a message to descendants, laid during the construction of the Mound of Immortality in Polotsk, will be opened in 2017. This was discussed today during a round table dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the opening of the memorial complex, the press service of the Polotsk District Executive Committee reported.

"In 2017, the year of the centenary of Soviet power, a capsule with a message to descendants, sealed under one of the slabs on the day the memorial was laid - June 8, 1966 - will be opened," said Galina Muravey, Chairperson of the Polotsk District Council of the Belarusian Public Association of Veterans. She recalled that the solemn opening of the mound took place literally a month later - on July 3, 1966. Then Heroes of the Soviet Union Zinaida Tusnolobova-Marchenko, Viktor Yerinko, and Boris Getz lit the Eternal Flame at the memorial site. The "Mound of Immortality" memorial complex stands on the left bank of the Western Dvina, in the southern part of Polotsk. It was erected in just 14 days, its height is 10 m. The project author is architect Nikolai Glazunov. The memorial became a symbol of the courage of more than 200,000 defenders and residents of Polotsk who died during the Great Patriotic War. On holidays, a torch is traditionally lit on top of the Mound in memory of those who gave their lives for the sake of the future. In the current anniversary year, several patriotic events will be held at the Mound of Immortality.
