A hoard of ancient coins found in Verkhnedvinsk

A large hoard of ancient coins has been found in Verkhnedvinsk, Alexander Ivashkevich, deputy head of the Verkhnedvinsk border service department, head of the ideological work and professional training department, told a BELTA correspondent. Returning from an excursion around the city, a group of servicemen was passing by the Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where earthworks are currently underway. One of the soldiers noticed a small bag sticking out of the ground, which contained ancient coins. A total of 392 coins of various denominations, dated 1557-1564, were counted. The hoard has been handed over to the Verkhnedvinsk District Department of Internal Affairs to establish its historical and cultural value. According to Vitebsk local historian, Candidate of Historical Sciences Nikolai Pivovar, this find is quite significant and therefore, undoubtedly, an event for historical science. He does not rule out that this is a hoard from the time of the Livonian War. "The owner of the treasure hid it while fleeing, hoping to return and pick it up later," - suggested Nikolai Pivovar. -0-
