Stem cell therapy is used at Vitebsk City Central Hospital

Лечение стволовыми клетками применяют в Витебской городской центральной больнице
Each year, over a hundred residents of the Vitebsk region avoid disability thanks to innovative surgeries at the proctology department of the Vitebsk City Clinical Hospital, where advanced medical methods and technologies are implemented.

Annually, nearly 2,000 people undergo treatment here in 55 beds; emergency patients are admitted from all over the region.

Surgeon Igor Buyanov is known far beyond the region, partly due to his developments.

The head of the department, a surgeon of the highest category, Igor Buyanov, is known far beyond the region precisely for the application of new minimally invasive technologies, some of which are his own developments.

Igor Valerievich graduated from Vitebsk State Medical University and the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, is a member of the Association of Coloproctologists of Russia, and is certified to practice in any healthcare facility in the CIS. Much of what the Vitebsk doctor uses is considered cutting-edge in global medicine.

– For general proctological interventions (removal of hemorrhoidal nodes, fissures, rectal polyps, etc.), we use the pneumodevulsion method, – says the surgeon. – We made the device ourselves. The postoperative period is painless, the patient does not need injectable analgesics, and wounds heal faster. The technology was observed in a Moscow clinic. We also perform dozens of high-tech rectal surgeries annually using polypropylene mesh. The surgeon models the shape of the mesh, taking into account the individual anatomical features of the person, which eliminates the need to purchase an expensive kit (from $600 to $1000) for such treatment. The surgery is performed free of charge.

Operations for colostomy, enterostomy, and complicated stomas are performed using advanced methods. Only in the proctology department of Vitebsk and in Minsk are unique operations performed to form small intestinal reservoirs in patients with previously removed colons.

– We provide medical care to a very wide range of patients, – notes Igor Buyanov. – In particular, using our method, we eliminate such colostomy complications as stenosis, prolapse, and intussusception. Without extensive abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. We perform radical operations for advanced hemorrhoids using the method of the Italian professor Longo: all nodes and, simultaneously, another pathology – rectocele are removed. We have mastered minimally invasive surgeries that use a minimum of surgical instruments, and patients stay in the hospital for only a day or two.

– Furthermore, we are seriously engaged in aesthetic proctology, – notes the head of the department. – One can understand people, and it is usually young women and men who seek such help: polyps and other neoplasms, even if they do not pose a mortal danger, cause discomfort and create complexes. We help for free, and it only takes a day.

Among the latest innovations is treatment with stem cells, or more precisely, bone marrow cells

The technology is effective for people with complicated vascular diseases, gangrene, trophic ulcers, atherosclerosis, and poorly healing wounds. The proctology department has beds for such patients.

In this area, the department's doctors work hand in hand with scientists from the Department of Hospital Surgery of Vitebsk Medical University (associate professors Andrey Kovalenko and Sergey Fedyanin cooperate with the hospital).

– In its simplest form, the technique involves injecting the affected areas with the patient's own bone marrow cells, – explains Sergey Fedyanin, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery of VGMU, one of the developers of innovative operations. – This promotes the growth of new blood vessels and faster healing of extensive wounds. We have been working with the new technology for three years, performing over 120 operations, and, as studies show, in 90% of cases, we manage to save people from disability – gangrene and amputation. A candidate's dissertation on this topic is currently being prepared at the department.

Igor Buyanov, Head of the Proctology Department: Blindly following advertising kills

– Unfortunately, diseases of our specialty have become much younger recently, – says the surgeon. – For example, colorectal cancer is now among the leading oncological diseases, and it is often diagnosed in 30-year-old patients. The prognosis in advanced cases is grim, and the quality of life also deteriorates due to a stoma. The problem is that people, often embarrassed by completely natural conditions like hemorrhoids, come to us in very severe states. A person experiences constant abdominal pain, digestive disorders, and suppresses the symptoms with painkillers advertised on television.

Surgeon Igor Buyanov recommends:

- If you experience constant constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, blood or mucus discharge, see a doctor immediately. These are alarming signs and a reason to consult specialists.

- To prevent proctological diseases,
eat less spicy and seasoned food.

- During exacerbations, do not drink coffee or alcohol, only tea.

- A sitz bath is the most effective hygienic measure.

- Do not overuse wet wipes:
chemical compounds are used for their flavoring.

- A healthy lifestyle is an excellent prevention for hemorrhoids and other diseases.
