President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited the Holy Euphrosyne Monastery in Polotsk

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited the Holy Savior-Transfiguration Monastery in Polotsk. He arrived here after a meeting at the district executive committee building on the development of the housing and communal services sector.

"I think I'll go into the church and at least light a candle. I haven't been here for a long time," Alexander Lukashenko noted.

In the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral, the head of state lit a candle, bowed to the cross and the relics of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk. By the way, the restoration of the shrine (tomb) of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk was carried out in 2003-2007 on the initiative of the Belarusian Exarchate and with the help of the President of Belarus.

"If you need anything, tell Natalia Ivanovna (Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, Natalia Kochanova. - BELTA note). We will find time to come and help," the Belarusian leader promised.

Then Alexander Lukashenko was informed about the progress of the restoration of the Holy Savior-Transfiguration Church. The history of restoration work showed that much was unknown about the church. This religious and architectural monument is remarkable for the fact that 90% of its 12th-century frescoes have been preserved. All types of work are planned to be completed by 2024. In total, the restoration of the frescoes took about two decades. During the restoration process, important discoveries were made, including the seals of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk herself.

The President spoke with archaeologists – students of Polotsk University. The Head of State recalled how he himself, as a student, went on archaeological excavations, including on the Dnieper. "We found ancient tools, starting with scrapers," he added.

"Guys, thank you for your work. Live peacefully, friendly, and definitely here," the Belarusian leader advised.
