Skiing and Nordic walking will foster a healthy lifestyle among residents of the Vitebsk region's border areas with Latvia. In accordance with the Lithuania-Latvia-Belarus IPA program, the project "Healthy Lifestyle Formation in the Border Areas of Latvia and Belarus" is being launched in the Vitebsk region, as reported to BelTA by Tatyana Suzdaleva, Head of the Information Center for Sustainable Development of Novopolotsk.

Eleven partners have undertaken the task of fostering a healthy lifestyle among border residents, including Novopolotsk, Gluboksky, Verkhnedvinsky, and Braslavsky districts of the Vitebsk region from the Belarusian side. The project envisages strengthening the material and technical base of sports and physical culture facilities and holding competitions for amateur athletes from Belarus, Latvia, and Lithuania. In particular, Novopolotsk intends to illuminate the recently constructed ski and roller ski track of the Novopolotsk State School of the Olympic Reserve in the settlement of Borovukha and purchase a machine for track preparation in winter conditions. Additionally, inventory for skiers and Nordic walking enthusiasts, a popular sport in Europe, will be purchased for all participating districts.

The project is designed for eighteen months. During this time, its participants plan to hold six competitions for amateur athletes, with two in each country. As Tatyana Suzdaleva noted, the main goal of the project is to create conditions for active recreation and attract as many people as possible to physical activities, as physical culture is an integral component of a healthy lifestyle.

The international technical assistance project "Healthy Lifestyle Formation in the Border Areas of Latvia and Belarus" was approved by Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 67 of January 29, 2013, "On the Approval of International Technical Assistance Projects." The Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee is responsible for the coordination and control of its implementation.
