The memorial to the Hero of the Soviet Union Zinaida Tusnolobova-Marchenko was opened after reconstruction in Polotsk
On June 11, 1942, Zinaida, as a medical instructor, participated in her first battle near Voronezh. In five days, the girl carried 26 wounded soldiers on her shoulders and was awarded the Order of the Red Star. In May 1965, she became the third Soviet nurse and the first in Belarus to be awarded the medal of the International Committee of the Red Cross - the Florence Nightingale Medal.
During eight months at the front, the heroic woman carried 123 wounded from the battlefield, while at the age of 23, she was left without arms and legs. But Zinaida Mikhailovna found the strength to live on: she created a strong family, engaged in extensive public work, helped former front-line soldiers, and communicated with young people.
Zinaida Tusnolobova-Marchenko is an honorary citizen of Polotsk, one of whose streets is named after her. A museum-apartment of the legendary heroine has been opened in the city, which houses an exhibition. The Polotsk Medical College is named after her. In the Vitebsk region, the Zinaida Tusnolobova-Marchenko Prize has been established, which is awarded annually to mothers.
