A memorial plaque in honor of the Hero of Russia will be unveiled on Unity Day in his homeland in the Polotsk district

April 1, Vitebsk / Diana Kurilo - BELTA /. A memorial plaque in honor of Hero of Russia Alexey Vorobyov will be unveiled on the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia on April 2 in his hometown in the village of Borovukha (Polotsk district, Vitebsk region), Sergey Splender, chairman of the Borovukha village executive committee, told a BELTA correspondent. In Soviet times, the village of Borovukha was called the capital of the "blue berets": for more than half a century, the 350th and 357th airborne regiments of the renowned 103rd Guards Airborne Division were stationed here. The father of the future Hero of Russia served in one of these regiments. A memorial plaque with the hero's portrait will be unveiled on house No. 6 on Armeyskaya Street, where Alexey Vorobyov, a hereditary paratrooper, spent his childhood. The solemn ceremony is expected to be attended by fellow servicemen of the father and son Vorobyovs, combat comrades from Pskov, Moscow, Minsk, leaders of Novopolotsk and Pskov, and the public. The honorable right to unveil the plaque will be granted to the father, retired Colonel Vladimir Vorobyov. As Sergey Splender noted, despite the fact that the former capital of paratroopers is no longer a military town, its heroic past is honored and remembered here. Fellow soldiers were scattered throughout the former USSR, but comrades-in-arms try to visit their former military town annually. Their meetings on Victory Day, Belarus Independence Day, and Airborne Forces Day have become a good tradition. Deputy commander of the reconnaissance company of the 104th Guards Regiment of the 76th Guards Airborne Division, Guards Senior Lieutenant Alexey Vorobyov, died on March 1, 2000, while performing a combat mission in the Chechen Republic. In that battle near height 776, 84 servicemen of the 4th and 6th companies died. Only six people survived. Thirteen officers, including Alexey Vorobyov, were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia. -0-
