July 20, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. Local authorities should pay more attention to the problem of population alcoholism. This opinion was expressed in an interview with a BELTA correspondent by the Prosecutor of the Vitebsk region, Gennady Dysko.

According to him, circumstances contributing to the commission of crimes include drunkenness and alcoholism, unemployment of certain citizens, their low moral level, shortcomings in the activities of prevention entities in preventing offenses, including work with persons returning from correctional institutions and LTPs, as well as other factors. "At the same time, drunkenness has a particularly negative impact on the crime rate, since 25.6% of all crimes in the region, according to data for January-June, are committed while intoxicated, and in Braslavsky, Verkhnedvinsky, Vitebsky, Lepelsky districts, Polotsk, Novopolotsk their share reaches more than 30%," the prosecutor emphasized.

According to Gennady Dysko, statistical data on the sale of vodka and fruit-berry wines also indicate excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages by residents of the region. Thus, in the first half of the year, trade organizations sold 690.1 thousand decaliters of vodka, which is 5.6 liters per person; 1.6 million decaliters of fruit-berry wines, or 13.4 liters, respectively. In addition to influencing the crime situation, population alcoholism leads to an increase in the number of people who died from alcohol poisoning and fires.

"Thus, local executive and administrative bodies need to take additional organizational measures aimed at preventing drunkenness and motivating people to lead a healthy lifestyle," Gennady Dysko concluded. -0-
