Police officers of the Vitebsk region are conducting a campaign to protect elderly residents from criminal encroachments and provide them with targeted assistance, the press service of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee reported. The special campaign "Attention - Age!" is held in the region until December 6 on the initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. "During these days, the police, together with other government agencies and public organizations, will intensify their efforts to provide targeted assistance and support to elderly people, primarily those who live alone. Their needs will be recorded, met by their own efforts, or transferred according to their competence. But the main task is to increase the level of safety for pensioners, who most often suffer from criminal encroachments. They will be explained certain provisions of the legislation, reminded of how not to become a victim of scammers and thieves, how to work with bank cards, and given other important life knowledge and skills," the department explained. Law enforcement officers themselves will visit all elderly people at their place of residence who live with individuals suffering from alcoholism, leading an antisocial lifestyle, or previously convicted, for additional prevention and identification of domestic violence and rights violations. Emphasis will also be placed on monitoring elderly citizens who are under preventive control. Briefings will be held with postal workers, social services employees, and other interested parties on ways to protect the elderly from offenses and criminal encroachments. By the way, there are about 290 thousand pensioners in the Vitebsk region, which is approximately 21% of the region's population.
