The international festival "Dudarski Rey" in Glubokoye hosted pipers from Croatia and Macedonia

Міжнародный фэст “Дударскі Рэй” ў Глыбокім завітаў дудароў з Харватыі і Македоніі
Creative ensembles from Croatia and Macedonia took part for the first time in the international festival of bagpipe regions "Dudarski Rey", which recently took place in Glubokoye.

The singing sound of the bagpipe on various concert venues, folk songs and dances are a peculiar calling card of the creative meeting. In general, during the existence of the festival, talented musicians from ten countries of the world have managed to brightly present their unique bagpipe motifs.

This year, the organizers made minor adjustments to the festival program, making the celebration, so to speak, a bypass. Foreign musicians performed at concert venues in Glubokoye and other settlements of the district. For the first time, bagpipers visited the urban settlement Podsvilje. It was there that the traditional musicians' procession and the gala concert took place.

The opening of the third festival, as in previous years, was held in the city square of famous countrymen, near the monument to Ignat Buinitsky, the founder of the first Belarusian national theater. The musicians of his theater troupe knew how to lead the way in their time, which means to be the leader, to set the tone. Among them was the bagpiper Adam Shulga, thanks to whom the melodious sound of the bagpipe was heard over his native lands. This is how the festival got its name.

– Thanks to the musical gifts of the students of the children's art school, our holiday has become even more beautiful this year, – says the initiator and one of the main organizers of the creative event, bagpiper Vital Voronov. – But the main heroine of the holiday is the bagpipe, whose wonderful, unforgettable sound inspires the accomplishment of good deeds. Today, low-level music can be heard in many places. But those who play and listen to the bagpipe can, in a sense, be considered musical elite.

Vital is confident that the festival of bagpipe regions will become a true cultural brand of the Glubokoye district and the region. Vital lives in Poland, but does not forget his small homeland. At foreign festivals, for example, in Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Poland, he is represented as a bagpiper from Glubokoye. He plays traditional repertoire for the Belarusian bagpipe, using tunes preserved in old sheet music and radio recordings.

Historical discoveries

During the press conference, Vital presented a dudа made by Belarusian craftsman Siarhei Chybryk. It is a complete replica of an ancient musical instrument found in Vilnius with an engraved inscription: "Veratsei village, Prozaoki commune. 1849."

– This is the real Glubokaya dudа. It has a slightly atypical sound, a different size compared to the Lepel dudа, which was previously considered the oldest and was also called the undisputed standard of the Belarusian dudа, – says Vital. – Another replica is being made by Dzmitry Dziomin, who was born in Glubokaye and now lives in Russia.

Vital Voranau, after playing the new-old dudа, told the press conference participants how he was lucky to find an interesting graphic drawing at an auction in France and, with the help of donations from interested Glubokaye residents, purchased it. Its "age" is several centuries. Now the find will be kept in the Glubokaye library along with other books and items dedicated to the dudа.

The festival also featured the presentation of a re-release of Vital Voranau's book under the new title "Dudary of the Glubokaye Region." The cover of the publication features a painting by Eduard Matsushonak, an artist native to the Glubokaye region. He also came to the celebration.

– The sound of the dudа conveys emotions of sadness and joy, pain and anxiety, – asserts the artist. – On the painting, I depicted an ornamental element. It symbolizes the energy that the dudа imparts with its sound.

Foreign Masters of Musical Affairs

For the residents of Glubokaye and guests, the festival is a unique excursion into the musical spaces of the past, an introduction to the dudа tunes of various regions. For example, Croatia, or more precisely, the Croatian Zagorje region, was represented at the festival by musician Stepan Vechkovich, head of the folklore group "Lado." According to him, many melodies can be played on the dudа, including jazz and rock.

He performed on stage at the international competition "Eurovision" twice with representatives of his country. The sounds of the dudа adorned the musical numbers.

Stepan can play 30 musical instruments. By the way, the ones he brought to the festival, he made himself. Talking about the history of his country, ancient traditions, the musician presented types of folk instruments of Croatia, paying more attention to the gajda, which is a type of bagpipe.

– There are 10 types of bagpipes in Croatia. Each region has its own characteristic one, – notes Stepan Vechkovich. – Their sound conveys the mood, the temperament of the musician, and even the specifics of the landscape. In the mountains and on the plains, musicians play in their own way. What the musical instrument is made of is also of direct importance.

The musician came to Glubokoye with his assistant Marko Maić. And Alexander Arabadzhiev, with his students, presented the musical traditions of North Macedonia. They beat out a specific musical rhythm characteristic of Macedonia on the tapane, which is a song in itself, played the ancient tarabuka, inside which a tambourine is hidden, and presented the singing sound of the double-stringed tambura and other musical instruments.

In turn, guests from Poland talked about musical instruments characteristic of Greater Poland and the Kozioł region, which got its name thanks to a musical instrument. Among the 8 types of bagpipes, there is the "white goat," made from a solid piece of sheepskin. The musical ensemble includes conservatory applicants Adam Knopel and Karolina Kotik, and music school student Kamil Knopel.

For the festival participants, masters of the House of Crafts, local entrepreneurs prepared beautiful souvenirs with images of the Belarusian bagpipe and symbols of the music festival.
