The Vitebsk waste sorting plant is planned to open in April

A waste sorting plant is planned to be commissioned in April this year in the Vitebsk region, near the operating solid municipal waste landfill, the main department of housing and communal services of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee reported.

The plant's capacity will allow sorting up to 100 thousand tons of waste per year. The Ministry of Housing and Communal Services initiated the construction of the enterprise. The facility is being built at the expense of the state institution "Operator of Secondary Material Resources". Today, Vitebsk is the only regional center in Belarus that does not yet have a waste sorting plant.

The city's housing and communal services noted that specialists from Spetsavtobaza remove 748 thousand cubic meters of waste from the regional center per year. "In Vitebsk, the housing and communal services balance includes 450 container sites. Last year, 42 were repaired, and this year we will continue to put them in order with the subsequent installation of euro containers," the enterprise added.

For higher quality waste sorting in the Vitebsk region, work on sealing garbage chutes continues. There are five settlements in the region with houses equipped with garbage chutes: Vitebsk, Orsha, Polotsk, Novopolotsk, and Novolukoml. In Orsha, all garbage chutes have already been sealed where possible. In the courtyards of the remaining multi-story buildings, there is not enough space to install a container site in accordance with the norms. In Vitebsk, 89 garbage chutes were sealed in 2016, and subsequently, this figure did not exceed nine chutes, and in 2019, only two were sealed. Their closure requires the consent of more than half of the residents of the house, but so far, in most cases, Vitebsk residents are against the conservation of garbage chutes.
