Bison have appeared in the north of the Vitebsk region
Bison, our natural heritage, have now settled in the very north of the country. Last weekend, after more than a year of being kept in an enclosure at the Krasny Bor hunting farm, about 50 of these beauties, as well as about a hundred deer, were released into the wild – in the remote and uninhabited forests of the Verkhnedvinsk and Rossonsky districts.
“We opened the enclosure, put out feed. The deer came out first. They returned. Many were then lured out during the day. Then the bison became interested in the food, and some immediately rushed into the forest,” says Yuri Apenchenko, head of the Verkhnedvinsk Inspectorate for the Protection of Fauna and Flora, about the intricacies of the special operation.
Specialists claim that the bison are in excellent condition. Over the year in captivity, the population, which consisted of former inhabitants of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Osipovichi Forestry, and even "foreigners" from Poland, has grown by more than 40%. 11 calves were born. An unprecedented event!
Now the bison will be protected and fed in winter. The platforms for this, the correspondent of "SB" was assured, have been prepared.
“Residents of the Verkhnedvinsk and Rossonsky districts have no need to worry about the behavior of their new neighbors. The nearest villages to their habitat are more than ten kilometers away. Moreover, the settlements themselves are practically uninhabited, except that summer residents come in the summer,” clarifies Yuri Apenchenko.
