The oldest church has been restored in the Vitebsk region
In the village of Kamai, Postavy district, the Church of St. John the Baptist has been restored, reports the "Catholic Herald".
Specialists from Minsk have restored the frescoes with the "Pahonia" coat of arms and the presbytery - an elevated area for the altar and clergy. The Kamai Church is considered the oldest in the Vitebsk Diocese - it was built at the beginning of the 17th century (1603-1606).
During the mass, the memory of the martyr, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, was honored. The priest bravely spoke out about human rights, criticized the communist authorities in Poland, and thousands of people came to listen to his sermons. He was killed 30 years ago.
Interestingly, the church in Kamai was active even during Soviet times: a local priest helped a partisan hide from the Germans. After the war, he served in the KGB and contributed to the church not being closed.
