The worst-case flood scenarios in Belarus did not materialize

April 2, Minsk / Vladimir Matveev - BELTA /. The worst-case scenarios for the flood development in Belarus have not materialized. This was stated by the Minister of Emergency Situations Enver Bariev today in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, according to a BELTA correspondent. "The flood situation is under continuous control. We have the results of monitoring the hydrological situation in real-time. In principle, our most critical worst-case scenarios for the flood situation are not materializing," said Enver Bariev. The situation on the rivers of the Black Sea basin (Pripyat and its tributaries) is developing positively, and the peak situation has already been overcome. "There are still isolated areas near Mozyr and Rechitsa where a slight rise in water levels in the rivers is observed, but it is not critical. There are floods, but they are not as extensive as expected," the minister noted. As for the situation on the Western Dvina, there is a rise in water levels of up to 80 cm per day, but unlike the Polissya Lowland, the rivers in the north have sufficiently capacious banks and the riverbed can accommodate more water. "Nevertheless, there is a problematic situation, particularly in Verkhnedvinsk - there are floods there. Since the main water collection into the Western Dvina is formed in Russia, the situation may change. In this regard, we have maneuvered forces and resources to be ready to respond. There are ice jams and blockages on the Russian side that are not being cleared. If they break through in several places, the water will flow. But all measures have been taken," Enver Bariev assured. -0-
