Sponsor found for the project to recreate Marc Chagall's quarter in Vitebsk
May 18, Minsk /BELTA/. A sponsor has been found for the reconstruction of the Marc Chagall quarter in Vitebsk. This was announced today to journalists by the Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities, Honored Architect of Belarus Leonid Levin, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
Leonid Levin noted that this large-scale project will immortalize the memory of other famous artists whose lives are connected with Vitebsk: Malevich, Pen, Kandinsky.
The quarter will be located in the historical part of Vitebsk - on Pokrovskaya Street and its surrounding areas. This place is famous for being the birthplace of Marc Chagall, and a museum has been created in the artist's paternal home, which has survived to this day. According to the architectural concept, this part of the city with a total area of 50 hectares should evoke the life and work of the great master, develop the ideas of avant-garde art, and become a tourist highlight of Chagall's homeland. Hotels and restaurants will also be built in this area.
As previously reported, the project involves three phases of implementation. The first stage includes the restoration of Pokrovskaya Street in the spirit of the early 20th century. Souvenir shops and a small hotel will appear next to the Chagall House-Museum. After the second and third phases are completed, the quarter will feature shops, cafes, a center for contemporary art with an exhibition hall and an art school. According to preliminary estimates, the total cost of the project will be about $200 million.
