Since the beginning of August, the city has been hosting the charity event "Together to School," organized in conjunction with the Peace Foundation, the City Women's Council, and BRSM activists.
The organizers of the event are asking city residents who are purchasing school supplies for their own children to buy one extra item (a pen, pencil, ruler, notebook, or felt-tip pens) and place it in special collection boxes located in retail outlets.
"Charity events to prepare children from low-income families for school have been held in Novopolotsk before. However, they were usually organized within work collectives. This is the second year we are directly collecting school supplies in retail outlets. The city residents have responded enthusiastically to our initiative – the generously sized boxes are already more than half full," said Vladimir Belyaev.
The final stage of the city-wide "Together to School" event will take place in Novopolotsk on August 26. A celebration for first-graders from low-income and troubled families will be held at the city's cinema and video center. An entertainment program, a sweet table, and a cartoon screening in a modern 3D hall will be organized for the children.
Vladimir Belyaev emphasized that gifts for the new academic year will be received not only by first-graders. Sets of school supplies from the city's residents will also be distributed to students in grades 2-4.
