Novopolotsk ophthalmologists master new high-tech surgeries

Новополоцкие офтальмологи освоили новые высокотехнологические операции

Novopolotsk ophthalmologists have mastered new high-tech surgeries that allow patients to preserve their eyes. Previously, with such pathologies, the organ had to be removed. So far, 5 organ-preserving plastic surgeries have been performed on patients suffering from deep corneal ulcers, complex eye inflammations, or eye injuries resulting from severe trauma. All surgeries were successful, but to avoid complications, doctors will monitor the operated patients for a considerable period.

– Such interventions are called anterior segment eye plasty, – explains Svetlana Sharanovich, head of the inter-district ophthalmology department of the Novopolotsk City Hospital. – It is performed using donor tissue – a piece of placenta taken during a Cesarean section and specially prepared for use. That is, the eye receives a protective membrane – the defect area is simply sutured. One amniotic membrane is enough for dozens of operations; we can work with it for eighteen months.

The need for such surgical interventions in the region is quite high.
