New trolleybus route No. 16 is planned to be launched in Vitebsk by September 1
A new trolleybus route No. 16 is planned to be launched in Vitebsk by September 1, 2023, as reported by Alexander Nefedov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Architecture and Construction of the Regional Executive Committee, on the eve of the session of the Regional Council of Deputies, where the development of the region's transport industry was analyzed.
The route will connect the Bilevo and Cheremushki microdistricts with the central part of the regional center via Tereshkova and Voini-Internatsionalistov streets. As Alexander Nefedov noted, the route is planned in such a way that residents of new microdistricts can reach most (about 85%) of the city's main medical institutions without transfers. According to specialists' estimates, about 7,000 people will use this route daily. To service it, 8 domestic trolleybuses with autonomous running have already been received, and a total of 10 such vehicles are planned to be purchased through mutually beneficial partnership with the Minsk Automobile Plant and government support.
– To launch the route by the new academic year, a certain amount of work needs to be done on Yanopolskaya Street so that this section of the street and road network is suitable in its characteristics for public transport movement, – explained Alexander Nefedov.
Also, in the plans for 2023, the work on modernizing passenger terminals will continue. 5 electronic information boards have already been installed in Vitebsk, and now the task is to launch at least 5 such facilities quarterly. In addition, a smart stop will appear in the city, where, along with an electronic board, free Wi-Fi will be available, banking operations can be performed using an info kiosk, and a number of other technological features will be accessible. The smart stop project is currently being finalized for Vitebsk specifics, Alexander Nefedov added.
A serious update awaits communications and other infrastructure elements for electric transport. Especially since some facilities were built in the post-war period, explained the Deputy Chairman of the committee. In the future, in Vitebsk, priority will be given to the development of trolleybus services.
– For now, we do not see the expediency of extending tram tracks, forof this type of transport require separate stops and separate sections of the roadway. This is expensive. But trolleybuses, especially those with autonomous running, have proven themselves excellently, including in the Bilevo microdistrict and on Gagarin Street, "considers Alexander Nefedov.
The renewal of the bus fleet will also continue. Recently, this process has significantly intensified.
In 2022, about 80 buses of various modifications were purchased using funds from the regional budget, and 49 units are planned for purchase in the current year. This will allow replacing outdated vehicles with modern, more reliable, and comfortable equipment for passengers. For this purpose, leasing financing instruments are actively used, which makes it possible to purchase equipment in large quantities compared to the direct procurement mechanism, noted Alexander Nefedov.
67.6 million rubles have been allocated for subsidizing transport organizations over the past two years, with plans for 2023 amounting to 37.9 million rubles.
