The Belarusian water rescue service (OSVOD) warns about the treachery of the first ice

The recent cold snap is contributing to ice formation on the bodies of water in the Vitebsk region. The first ice attracts winter fishing enthusiasts and children, who can fall victim to their own carelessness. By the way, a tragedy occurred in Gomel on December 4: three elementary school students fell through the ice, one was saved by passers-by, and two drowned.

Fishermen should wait a little longer for the ice to strengthen, and parents should constantly monitor their children's behavior near water bodies during this time. Rivers are extremely treacherous now. OSVOD reminds: it is unsafe to cross water bodies on ice less than 7 cm thick. Especially at night, in bad weather, and in unfamiliar places. Areas covered with a thick layer of snow and dark spots on the snow cover should be avoided.

Specialists strongly recommend that ice fishing enthusiasts take care of personal safety equipment (a rope 15-20 m long, a life jacket) for the season. Do not make many holes close to each other, do not jump or run on the ice, do not gather in large groups, and do not abuse alcoholic beverages.
